MAT-093 Foundations of Mathematics

Course Description

Topics include solving applied problems with whole numbers, decimals and fractions; ratios and proportions; rates; percentages and applications in sales tax, interest, commissions, and discounts; determining numerical averages; exponents and square roots; measurement; and geometry. Technology is incorporated to facilitate problem solving. This course does not satisfy degree requirements. Course requires an additional lab hour. Upon completion of this course with a grade of C or better, students enroll in MAT-097 Foundations of Algebra. Credit hours: 3.0.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Solve real world applications involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
  2. Understand what fractions represent quantitatively
  3. Understand equivalencies between fractions, decimals, and percents
  4. Apply the concepts of ratio and proportion
  5. Apply the concept of percent to applications such as percent increase/decrease, discount, interest, commission, and sales tax.
  6. Apply the concepts of perimeter, area, and volume to basic geometric figures
  7. Find and interpret the mean of a distribution of numbers

WHOLE NUMBERS

  1. Round whole numbers
  2. Solve word problems involving operations with whole numbers (with emphasis on geometry applications)
  3. Calculate powers of whole numbers and simplify expressions with exponents
  4. Compute square roots of perfect squares
  5. Perform computations according to the convention on order of operations
  6. Order whole numbers using the symbols =, < and >
  7. Identify factors and multiples of whole numbers
  8. Define and identify prime and composite numbers
  9. Express a whole number as a product of its prime factors

    FRACTIONS

  10. Identify and interpret: fraction, numerator, denominator, proper fraction, improper fraction, and mixed numbers
  11. Express improper fractions as mixed numbers
  12. Express mixed numbers as improper fractions
  13. Write fractions in simplest form
  14. Identify and find equivalent fractions
  15. Multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers
  16. Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers
  17. Simplify fraction expressions including complex fractions
  18. Compare the size of fractions using =, < and >

    DECIMALS
