AP Scores
English & ELL Placement
Students with AP scores of 3 or above on the English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition are exempt from the English placement test.

Math Placement
Students with AP scores of 3 or higher on the Calculus AB, Calculus AB Subgrade, or Calculus BC are exempt from the math placement test.

College and University Courses
Students who have previously completed English or math coursework (minimum of 3 credits) with a final grade of C or higher at a regionally accredited college or university do not need to complete placement requirement. Students who have completed English language learning courses only should complete the Guided Self-Placement for English.
Students who hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United State are exempt from English and math placement testing.
Students who hold a bachelor’s degree from a country outside of the United States are exempt from math placement testing. Students may also be exempt from English placement testing if they completed a bachelor’s degree from one of the approved English-speaking countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Canada, Grenada, (British) Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, United Kingdom, St. Kitts & Nevis, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe.
For testing exemptions for previous college or university coursework, please email a copy of your unofficial transcript to transferservices@bhcc.edu using your BHCC student email and include your BHCC student ID number.
Note that students may opt to take a math assessment for a higher placement.
High School GPA
English GPA Placement
- GPA must be 2.7 or higher
- GPA must be from a U.S. high school*
- GPA must be less than 10 years old
- Students are eligible for placement into ENG-111 College Writing I.
*Students from English speaking countries outside the U.S. are advised to take the Guided Self-Placement Survey.
Math GPA Placement
- GPA must be 2.7 or higher
- GPA must be less than 3 years old
- If high school was outside the U.S., the transcript must go through an evaluation service.
SpanTran offers evaluations of international high school transcripts. Select the “Course Analysis” option. Fees vary. Please note: Students are not required to submit their transcripts for evaluation. Instead, you are welcome to take the math placement test which is free.
- Students who receive the GPA math placement are eligible for the following courses:
- MAT 171 – Finite Mathematics
- MAT 172 – Contemporary Math
- MAT 174 – Quantitative Reasoning
- MAT 181 - Statistics
- MAT 099/194 Cluster – Intermediate Algebra (099) with College Algebra
Students interested in taking College Algebra (MAT-194), Precalculus (MAT-197), or Calculus (MAT-281) also have the option of taking the Accuplacer test for placement into a higher course.
Required Documentation
- Submit a copy of your high school transcript that shows the cumulative GPA, or a copy of any other official, signed document from your high school, as proof of the cumulative GPA.
- High school seniors may submit their current cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher during their senior year when applying to the college for exemption from the placement test. An official and final transcript will need to be submitted after graduation.
- Dual enrollment students who have completed the 11th grade may use their current cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher to qualify for an exemption from the placement test.
Where to Submit Your Transcripts
- You can upload your transcript when you submit your application, or
- Email it to the Assessment Center at testing@bhcc.edu, or
- Bring it to the Assessment Center in the B-Building, Room B118.
- Guest Students can email documents to studentcentral@bhcc.edu or can submit them in person to the Student Central desk in the lobby of the B-Building.
HiSET or GED Tests
HiSET and GED English scores must be from 2018 or later.
Math scores must be less than 3 years old.

Students are eligible for placement into ENG-111 (College Writing I) with any of the scores below. Scores must be less than 2 years old.
- TOEFL iBT—Score 88-120
- IELTS—Score 6.5 or above
- Duolingo—Score 110-160
