A Message from President Eddinger: Tyre Nichols
Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President
Dear BHCC Community,
Bunker Hill Community College joins those around the world outraged by the murder of Tyre Nichols by police officers in Memphis, Tennessee, earlier this month - the latest in a seemingly endless trail of harassment and killing of Black men by law enforcement in our country’s history. The release of the officers’ body camera footage this week has brought further grief and devastation, and revealed the full brutality, racism, and lawlessness of Tyre’s killers and the systems they represent. For Tyre’s family, friends, and all who mourn his death and celebrate his life, we hope for the healing light of justice, mercy, and peace.

Message from President Eddinger: Wishing You a Safe and Happy Lunar New Year
Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President
Dear BHCC Community,
On Sunday, my family and I celebrated the Lunar New Year, an observance we will share over the next two weeks with other families around the world. But this year’s New Year’s celebration was different: not long after we welcomed the Year of the Rabbit, we heard news of several mass shootings, two of those in Asian American communities in California. Those events have introduced a sadness to what ordinarily is a joyful time of year.

Message from President Pam Eddinger: Shootings in California
Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President
Dear BHCC Community,
On Sunday, my family and I began the celebration of the Lunar New Year. Just as we finished New Year’s Eve dinner on Saturday evening, we heard about the mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, often known as the city’s Second Chinatown. Ten individuals were killed, and as many wounded, all in their 50s, 60s, and 70s. We were devastated that these elders, engaging joyfully in dance lessons and social activities, were so senselessly and brutally gunned down.

Message from President Pam Eddinger: Colorado Springs Shooting
Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President
Dear BHCC Community:
In the midst of the holiday season, we are grieving. Our peace this past week was shattered by the deadly shooting at Club Q, a gathering place for the LGBTQIA+ community in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The violence claimed the lives of five people and injured 17 others, and to add to the devastation, this happened on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day named to honor those lost to anti-transgender violence. This latest incident echoes the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, the gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where 49 were killed and as many wounded. The trend of violence against the LGBTQIA+ community has not abated, and the acrimonious divisions in our society have only added fuel to these senseless acts.

Hurricane Fiona: Supporting the BHCC Community
Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President

In particular, Fiona devastates Puerto Rico on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria, even as the island struggles valiantly to recover from the last tragedy. We understand that it will take a number of days to restore power. Water, medicine and basic needs remain critical. Those of you with friends and family in Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, The British and the U.S Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, and all other impacted communities in the Caribbean and the Diaspora, we share your worries about the health and safety of your loved ones and hold them in our thoughts.

Office of the President: A message from President Eddinger on the recent events in Uvalde, Laguna Woods, and Buffalo
Dear BHCC Community,
Yesterday, the scope of national tragedy grew larger: the senseless murder of 19 people, all but one of them school children, in Uvalde, Texas. The more frequently these tragedies occur, the harder they are to comprehend. A supermarket in Buffalo, a church in Laguna Woods, a school in Parkland, a school in Sandy Hook, and so many more murders driven by racism, misogyny, homophobia, and other forms of hate, made possible by the easy reach of a gun. How do we end this senseless cycle of violence? Why are the broadly popular policies for gun safety left to languish in the halls of power? Why is the most common reaction to these mass shootings to simply wait for the next one?

Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President
Dear BHCC Community,
Since last week’s Russian invasion of Ukraine, I have watched the events unfolding in Europe with concern and sorrow. Violence and war are the enemies of the values that this College and virtually every educational institution hold dear. Where education broadens our understanding of ourselves and the world, war narrows it; where education lifts a light by which we might see, violence casts only shadow. As a College, we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and with victims of war and violence everywhere.

President’s Statement on Violence Against the Asian American Pacific Islander Community
Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President
The shooting in Atlanta yesterday that resulted in the death of six Asians, and the rise in attacks on the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Community across the nation have left many of us feeling outraged, disheartened, and fearful. In mainstream press and social media, we hear reports of targeted acts of verbal and physical violence. From our own students, we hear about experiences of aggression on and off-campus that have made them feel unsafe. With the recent attacks on elders in the Asian communities, in which respect for family and older generations is especially important, the physical and psychological insult is severely felt.

Reflecting and Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President
Dear BHCC Community,
Our nation observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 18 in the aftermath of an insurrection in the Capitol that threatens our democracy. The presence of white extremists and their violent acts make it clear that the movement led by Dr. King to find equality and opportunity for all is far from complete. On this commemorative day, in the spirit of Dr. King’s work, I invite all of us to reflect on our own efforts in lifting up our Black communities and our communities of color, in recognizing the cultural wealth that our students and employees bring to our institution, and in envisioning a world where Dr. King’s vision of social and economic equity can come about.

President’s Letter to the College: A Community in Mourning
Dear College Community,
I am writing today with sorrow and anger, as our nation mourns yet another senseless death in the tragedy of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN. The oppression and pain of systemic racism, unrelieved by the imperceptible progress towards equal justice and social equity, has boiled over in many communities across the nation. Marches and demonstrations of solidarity are happening in cities and towns, including our community of Greater Boston. The oppression and heartache are only compounded by the miseries of the COVID-19 outbreak, which disproportionately affects people of color, and magnifies the inequities in the communities served by the College.

Single Stop Announces Social Innovation Fund Study Results and Latest Performance Numbers
At a press conference on November 30, Single Stop USA, the national nonprofit focused on eradicating poverty through connecting those in need to the more than $1 trillion in available governmental programs and resources, announced the results of a recent study into the organization’s effect on student achievement and success. The Social Innovation Fund-sponsored study was funded through New Profit and spearheaded by independent evaluators at RAND. A Post-Election Note from the College President
Dear BHCC Community, I am moved to write to you today after a troubled year of racial strife, followed by an unprecedented election season. It has been four decades since I came to the United States with my family, drawn by educational opportunities and the idea of freedom. That dream has proven to be as idyllic as it was arduous. But it is not until this past year that I have witnessed, in full relief, the shining promise and the abysmal darkness in the making of the American Dream. Many at the College have wondered about our way forward. What path do we follow as individuals, and as a community of scholars?
