Governor Karyn Polito visited the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute on February 25, 2020, to announce $14.6 million in Skills Capital Grant awards to 54 educational institutions to update equipment and expand student enrollment in programs that provide career education.

Boston Public Schools and Bunker Hill Community College Receive Funding for Data Tracking of At-Risk Students

The Boston Opportunity Youth Collaborative (OYC) has been awarded a grant from the Aspen Institute Forum for Community Solutions to reduce the number of students, particularly young men of color, who get disconnected from high school or community college. Most of the funding will go to the Boston Public Schools (BPS) and Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) in order to increase their capacity to monitor the status of those students most likely to leave school without earning a diploma, credential, or degree. Better data and better sharing of information will prompt and inform the interventions necessary to get students back on track.

Bunker Hill Community College to Offer Courses as Part of Amazon’s Small Business Academy

On Friday, November 1, 2019 Amazon announced Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) as one of their community college partners in their new Amazon Small Business Academy. The academy offers a range of educational initiatives to help entrepreneurs, startups, and business owners succeed online. BHCC is one of six community colleges selected to offer Amazon-supported digital business courses. Launching in February 2020, the classes will cover the fundamentals of online business strategies, marketing, merchandising, inventory management, and more.

BHCC’s Early Childhood Education Gets Financial Boost From Career Pathways Initiative

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has received nearly $594,000 in grants from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) Career Pathways initiative. This program was developed by the EEC to make it possible for the Early Childhood Education (ECE) workforce, and those interested in joining the field, to receive the classes and support needed to attain a credential. BHCC is using this funding to provide classes, free-of-charge, as well as professional development activities, for local students. The grants were dispersed over two fiscal years with $296,904 to use from March-June 2019 and $296,904 for July 2019-June 2020.

BHCC STEM Students Wrap Up Summer Internships

Last week, 14 BHCC students, majoring in STEM programs, marked the completion of their paid summer internships with the presentation of their research projects at several institutions in Boston. The students, majoring in biology, engineering, electrical engineering and liberal arts, gave their presentations at the Baccalaureate Program at UMass Boston, the Materials Research Laboratory at MIT, the SPARC Program at Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and Harvard Research Experiences for Undergraduates.

Facebook Partners with BHCC to Offer Digital Marketing Course

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has partnered with Facebook to offer a Social Media Marketing course through Facebook’s Community Boost program. The Community Boost program was created by Facebook to promote digital skills to small businesses and individuals to meet the demand for digital marketing skills in today’s economy. Since 2014, the number of digital marketing jobs has increased 17% every year; that is twice the amount of digital marketing jobs available today than five years ago.

Boston’s Commissioner of Veterans’ Services Visits BHCC’s Veterans Center

Robert Santiago, Commissioner of Veteran’s Services for the City of Boston, visited Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) on July 22 to meet fellow veterans and military service members who are attending BHCC. The BHCC Veterans Center provides veterans, active duty military, Guard/Reservists and their eligible dependents specialized customer service and a smooth transition to BHCC.

BHCC’s Boston Welcome Back Center Receives Ubuntu Award From Boston Center for Refugee Health & Human Rights at Boston Medical Center

Boston Center for Refugee Health & Human Rights at Boston Medical Center (BCRHHR) held its annual Client Gala on July 10th, 2019. Nearly 170 clients and supporters of the Center gathered at the 14th floor of Boston University’s Hiebert Lounge to honor the strength and resilience of refugees from around the world. Bunker Hill Community College’s (BHCC) Boston Welcome Back Center received BCRHHR’s Ubuntu Award. Each year, BCRHHR presents the Ubuntu Award to an organization that embodies the spirit of the Zulu word, explained by Archbishop Desmond Tutu as meaning “the essence of being human.”

The Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) Adult Education and Transitions Program celebrated the achievement of students on June 22, 2019, at the Homewood Suites in Chelsea, MA.The students who were recognized completed their education courses in a consortium where they passed the HiSET®, completed adult basic education courses or completed their college courses for Transitions to College.

President Eddinger’s Take on JOBS Act

President Eddinger shared her perspective in an Inside Higher Ed article, “Brewing Battle Over Pell Grants”. In Washington D.C. there is bipartisan support for expanding Federal Pell Grants to include short-term job training. Proponents of the legislation see the bill as a way for adults to find better jobs in high-demand industries. However, there are legislators who express concern that short-term jobs may not offer livable wages and offer little connection to college degree pathways.

BHCC Awarded $140,000 Grant to Support Early College Programs

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) was among eight public colleges and 13 high schools that were awarded new early college designations giving high school students the opportunity to study college-level courses and obtain credits before graduating high school. On June 13, 2019, BHCC and Madison Park Technical Vocational High School’s Roxbury Massachusetts Advanced Post-Secondary Pathways Program (RoxMAPP) partnership was awarded a $140,000 grant to expand their early college program.

Professor Gustavo Rosa, assistant professor of the Visual Media Arts (VMA) Department wrote and directed a short film named, “Carro” that will be released on HBO this weekend. “Carro” is the story of an undocumented Brazilian immigrant living in the Boston area who decides to buy a car in an effort to better his life before returning home.
