Assistive Technology (AT) Available at Disability Support Services
Assistive Technology is defined as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities" (U.S. Congress, 1998)
AT Hardware
Most devices can be checked out each semester.
Examples of devices we have at DSS
- for low vision and blind students, such as magnifiers, large print keyboards, and tactile math tools
- for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, such as amplifiers, FM systems, and microphones
- for students with physical disabilities, such as large computer mice.
AT Software
Some of the software below is only given out if the student has certain accommodations.
Dragon (on computers at DSS only) - Voice recognition software for PC- Jaws - Screen reading software for computer users whose vision loss prevents them from seeing screen content or navigating with a mouse
- ZoomText - A screen magnification and document reading software for individuals who have low vision
- Kurzweil 3000 – A text-to-speech tool that supports users with reading, writing, and comprehension.
- Genio Notes (previously called Glean) – Notetaking software
