Basic Needs Syllabus Statement

Are you looking for a way to share information about the DISH Food Pantry, Single Stop, and other on-campus basic needs resources? Consider adding a Basic Needs Syllabus Statement. This short, descriptive paragraph can assist in creating a culture of care in your classroom and across BHCC as a whole. Here are some examples of basic needs security statements, provided by The Hope Center and adapted for Bunker Hill Community College:

“We learn as whole people. To learn effectively you must have basic security: a roof over your head, a safe place to sleep, enough food to eat. If you’re having trouble with any of those things, please talk with me or with the Dean of Students. Bunker Hill Community College has multiple resources available to assist you, including an on-campus food pantry and a basic needs resource office, Single Stop. Together we can work to make sure those needs are met.”

“It can be challenging to do your best in class if you have trouble meeting basic needs like safe shelter, sleep, and nutrition. If you have difficulty affording groceries or accessing sufficient food to eat every day, or lack a safe and stable place to live, I urge you to contact the Dean of Students and/or me. Bunker Hill Community College has multiple resources available to assist you, including an on-campus food pantry and a basic needs resource office, Single Stop. We are here to help.”

If you would like support or guidance when constructing your Basic Needs Syllabus Statement, please do not hesitate to reach out to the DISH Food Pantry at dish@bhcc.edu and/or Single Stop at singlestop@bhcc.edu.
