Knowledge and Skills of Environmental Scientists
Environmental Science is a field of study based on the interactions of living and non-living components of nature, with a focus on the impact of humans on the environment.
Environmental scientists study physical and life sciences to understand interactions within environmental systems and to determine the nature and extent of environmental problems. Environmental scientists are also trained to understand where these ecological considerations fit in with the complex economic, sociological and political systems within their communities.
The research and work of environmental scientists may include activities related to climate change, wildlife conservation, waste management, energy use, clean technology, sustainable agriculture, ecology, natural resource management, fate transport and pollution mitigation, toxicology, environmental advocacy and environmental policy.
Environmental scientists may work with engineers and technologists to develop solutions for environmental problems or work with policy makers and managers to spur the development of sustainable practices and policies.
