Bunker Hill Community College Named to President's Community Service Honor Roll

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

For the fourth consecutive year the Corporation for National and Community Service honored Bunker Hill Community College with a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Honor Roll recognizes exemplary service to America’s communities.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the project were chosen based on a series of factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation and the extent of a college’s inclusion of service learning in academic courses.

BHCC was recognized for the following programs: Senegal Educational Exchange and Service Program (SEE-Serve) a study-abroad program to promote peace and tolerance; Serve Boston 2009 partnership with community organizations providing students with opportunities for volunteerism and career development; and Alternative Spring Breaka spring-break trip during which students volunteer with Habitat for Humanity rebuilding homes on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation collaborates with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The President’s Higher Education Honor Roll is presented at the annual conference of the American Council on Education. “Congratulations to Bunker Hill Community College and its students for their dedication to service,” said Patrick Corvington, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National Community Service.“These students have achieved real results and demonstrated the value of putting knowledge into practice to help renew America through service.”
