BHCC Nursing Professor Honored in Boston Globe's Salute to Nurses
Tuesday, May 25, 2010
Professor Howard Weiner, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., was nominated by one of his students for the Boston Globe’s 8th Annual Salute to Nurses, published on May 2, 2010. “Professor Weiner champions the needs of the psychologically infirm,” wrote BHCC nursing student Scott Schocker. “Professor Weiner has inspired me to seek whatever resources are available in order to treat our patients with professionalism, compassion, empathy and dignity.”
Weiner, who is now in his fifth year at the College, teaches a range of courses including Psychiatric Nursing and Success in Nursing. He said he enjoys teaching at BHCC because of the diversity of the students and the fact that many of them are older, with a great deal of life experience. Weiner said he also appreciates being able to work in a community college setting, where there is such great potential for student success.
His educational credentials include five degrees: a B.A. in Psychology from Boston College; an M.S. in Health Psychology and Ph.D. in Community Counseling, both from Ohio University; a B.S. in Nursing from Salem State College; and an M.S. in Psychiatric Nursing from Northeastern University.
“Howard Weiner is a very humble man and it is no surprise that he was nominated,” said Dr. Roxanne Mihal, BHCC Dean of Nurse Education & Health professions. “He is an outstanding professor who reaches out to the students and always extends himself beyond the classroom.”
BHCC’s Nursing Program has been in existence for more than 30 years. Approximately 80% of students enrolled in the program will graduate in two years and are eligible to sit for their Registered Nurse Licensure examination.
