15th Annual Canstruction Competition Opens October 18, 2010

During the past 14 years, Boston-area design and construction firms have donated nearly 524,000 pounds of food (the equivalent of 399,000 meals) to the Greater Boston Food Bank through their participation in CANSTRUCTION. Thirteen firms will be participating again this year, during the 15th annual event taking place at Bunker Hill Community College starting on Monday, October 18, 2010, and running through Friday, November 5, 2010.

Competing CANSTRUCTION teams, led by architects and engineers, will showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. The firms will play off the theme “HUNGER IS NO LAUGHING MATTER,” and sculptures will include a replica of Comedian Conan O’Brien, Cookie Monster, Garfield Eating Lasagna, a Penniless Clown, Mooninite Marketing Bomb Redeemed, and others. Participating firms include ADD Inc./Arrowstreet JV, ARC Architectural Resources Cambridge, CBT, EYP Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, GENSLER, Nitsch Engineering, Payette, PCA Prellwitz Chillinski Associates, Robert Silman Associates, Simpson Gumpertz and Heger, Symmes Maini & McKee Associates, TRO Jung/Brannen and Wiss, Janney, Elstner/Northeastern University/JV.

CANSTRUCTION will be open to the public from Monday, October 18, through Friday, November 5, 2010. Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The opening reception/announcements will take place on October 18 at 10:30 a.m. in the main BHCC lobby. The GALA and awards announcement will take place on Thursday, October 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. Twelve structures will be placed throughout the Bunker Hill Community College campus, 250 New Rutherford Ave., Boston, MA. In addition, ARC Architectural Resources Cambridge will build “Mapping Hunger” at the Greater Boston Food Bank warehouse located at 70 South Bay Ave., Boston, MA. CANSTRUCTION is sponsored annually by the Society for Design Administration (SDA) and the Boston Society of Architects and is a trademarked design/build international competition. Teams of architects, engineers, and students compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. Since its inception, ten million pounds of food has been donated to aid in the fight against hunger.
