Bunker Hill Community College Lands $150,000 Grant to Train Food Industry Workers
Friday, October 31, 2014
The Bunker Hill Community College Workforce Development Center has received a $150,000 grant from the Commonwealth Corporation’s Regional Training Capacity Pilot Program. The College will use the funds to implement the Pathway to Success in the Food Industry program, a sequence of workplace English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes contextualized for the food industry. The classes will consist of multiple levels of ESOL instruction offered to non-native English-speaking employees working with partner employers in the nearby communities of Chelsea, Everett, Lynn, Malden and Revere.
The Pathway to Success in the Food Industry program aims to increase efficiency and speed while reducing errors on the production line or in the kitchen; increase adherence to safety protocols; increase the participation of line workers and restaurant workers in making suggestions and improvements to work procedures; and to increase promotion from within.
The Commonwealth Corporation strengthens the skills of Massachusetts youth and adults by investing in innovative partnerships with industry, education and workforce organizations.
The Workforce Development Center at Bunker Hill Community College meets business needs using both the comprehensive resources of the College and an extensive network of partners. The Center has a proven track record of creating custom training programs that develop workers’ skills and directly affect a corporation’s bottom line. Since its inception the Center has trained approximately 12,000 employees for more than 120 Greater Boston companies, from start-ups and small businesses to Fortune 500 corporations.
This project is funded by a Workforce Training Fund grant through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The grant program is administered by the Commonwealth Corporation.
