President Eddinger’s Take on JOBS Act

Monday, July 8, 2019

President Eddinger shared her perspective in an Inside Higher Ed article, “Brewing Battle Over Pell Grants”. In Washington D.C. there is bipartisan support for expanding Federal Pell Grants to include short-term job training. Proponents of the legislation see the bill as a way for adults to find better jobs in high-demand industries. However, there are legislators who express concern that short-term jobs may not offer livable wages and offer little connection to college degree pathways.

President Eddinger said that the financial burden of school will be eased if students get a job in their field on interest. She does acknowledge that covering materials in eight weeks will be challenging and that the proposed JOBS Act should not considered to be the ‘silver bullet’ for students to land good-paying jobs.
