College’s Chinatown Partnership Hosts BHCC Classes and Serves as Community Arts and Performance Hub
Congratulations to the Pao Arts Center on celebrating their 5th anniversary on October 19! Braving thunderstorms and traffic, guests gathered at Pao Arts Center for an evening of connection and celebration of the center’s accomplishments in its first five years of operation.
The center was founded in partnership between Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) and the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center. In addition to its role as a performing arts space, Pao Arts Center is also a center for BHCC courses and other public events.
The night began with a surprise visit from Mayor Michelle Wu, who has long been a fierce supporter of the arts. BHCC Associate Provost Franklyn Taylor offered congratulations on behalf of the College, saying “We are excited to be a part of this partnership and collaboration and we are looking forward to many more years of this partnership, as well as opportunities to explore and grow and be part of the center’s growth.”
The evening’s program included a special erhu performance by Pao Arts Center’s first Artist-In-Residence, Shaw Pong Liu, as well as the first audience performance of cellist Leo Eguchi’s newest project, UNACCOMPANIED (which premiered at Pao Arts Center on Saturday, October 22).
Located within the One Greenway building, the Pao Arts Center is a partnership between BHCC and Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC). The Center, which opened in 2017, is Chinatown’s first community-based arts, culture, and education center, and BHCC’s newest instructional center.
