Program Features
- Flexible Learning: The course is primarily asynchronous (self-paced), allowing you to study on your schedule.
- Instructor Support: If nine or more students enroll, an instructor will be assigned to facilitate sessions over Zoom to supplement your self-paced studies. Zoom sessions will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, anywhere between 6:00–9:30 p.m., for 90 minutes per session.
- Hands-On Labs: With nine or more students, five in-person lab sessions (3.5 hours each) will be held at the Charlestown campus (D-Building). Labs meet Tuesdays, 6 PM – 9:30 PM.
- E-book: Included with tuition and delivered via email within two days of the course start date.
- NWCA (VET) Certification Exam Voucher: Included in tuition, this nationally recognized credential helps boost your resume. Details about the exam.
- Clinical Externship or Job Placement Support: Upon successful completion of your online course, you will receive a Candidate Intake Survey from Ready to Work via text and email. This survey allows you to indicate your preference for a one-week clinical externship or job placement support. Once you’ve submitted your selection, a senior recruiter will contact you to schedule an intake call to discuss your availability, career goals, and next steps. If you choose the clinical externship option, please note that it requires a one-week (40-hour) commitment.
Length: It takes anywhere from 16 to 24 weeks to complete the online portion of the course. The more hours you put in each week, the fewer weeks it will take you to complete the online coursework. The online portion of the Veterinary Assistant course is 90 hours. Most students will complete their certification in 16-24 weeks.
Prerequisites for Enrollment
- Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent like HiSet or GED.
- Ideally, possess a 10th grade English reading level.
- Have access to a computer or laptop with internet connectivity for the online portion of the course.
- Be self-motivated and able to succeed in a course that combines self-paced study with Zoom sessions and in-person labs. Success in this course requires the ability to study independently and manage time effectively.
- Be able to log into Zoom sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.
- Have reliable transportation to attend six in-person labs at the Chelsea campus. Labs run from 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Attendance at all five labs is mandatory.
Note: The college provides a free shuttle bus that picks up students from the G-Building at the Charlestown campus to bring them to the Chelsea campus.
For Training Opportunity Program (TOP) Applicants
TOP Students: Students approved for the Training Opportunity Program (TOP) are required to commit to full-time study. This means dedicating 20 hours per week to course progress. Adhering to this study plan should enable TOP students to complete the program in as little as four weeks.

How much time should I be studying each week in the course?
The online portion of the course is 100 hours and most students will complete their certification in 8-16 weeks. If you want to finish the online portion of your studies in 8 weeks, be prepared to spend a minimum of 6.25 hours per week persisting in the course. If you want to complete it in 16 weeks, then you will spend about three hours per week studying. The more hours you spend studying in the course per week, the sooner you will finish. This does not account for in-person lab times.
Are the in-person labs required?
Yes, you must attend all in-person labs. Upon successful completion of the online course, you will complete the Candidate Intake Survey form where you may choose the 40-hour/one-week clinical externship placement or Job Support Services.
How many lab sessions are there?
There are three lab sessions with each being 3.5 hours in duration. Each session runs from 6 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
What are the workplace tasks of a Veterinary Assistant?
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians when asked and as directed in animal care and management
- Feed, bathe, and exercise all types of animals
- Clean and disinfect cages, kennels, stalls, examination and operating rooms, and other areas
- Restrain animals during examination and laboratory procedures
- Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment
- Maintain supply and retail inventories
- Monitor and care for animals before and after surgery or other medical procedures
- Help provide emergency first aid to sick and injured animals and wildlife
- Give medication or immunizations prescribed by the veterinarian and under a veterinarian’s direct supervision

What is the NWCA (VET) Exam?
A credential from National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of an entire content area, industry or area of expertise. An NWCA credential indicates to prospective or current employers that an earner has passed an extensive, rigorous exam which thoroughly tests the competency and skills of the earner. The Veterinary Assistant Certification credential documents the essential competencies for general front office, clinical, nursing care, and animal management procedures required of the veterinary assistant. This credential is appropriate for a veterinary assistant in the daily operations of a veterinary practice, research laboratory where animals are kept, animal hospital, equine barn, farm or ranch, animal shelter, kennel or animal day care, or other environment where animals are kept and cared for.
What are the job/career requirements?
Veterinary assistants support veterinarians and veterinary technicians in many tasks. They may be involved in overall veterinary practice office operations, procedures related to diagnostic imaging and treatment of animals, procedures involving animal care and husbandry, and procedures for veterinary nursing and emergency care. Most workers enter the occupation have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Though veterinary assistants can be trained on the job, many employers prefer that they have completed a formal training program and have experience working with animals. Successful veterinary assistant demonstrate compassion to both animals and their owners, are detailed oriented, and have physical strength and dexterity. Though they may not be allowed to complete all of the procedures independently, they must understand many anatomy, physiology, and veterinary medicine concepts and be able to assist when asked in a safe and competent manner. Depending upon the specific work environment, veterinary assistants must understand animal care for dogs, cats, equine, livestock, companion birds, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, orphaned or injured wildlife, and laboratory animals.
