Facilities Update: N-Building Elevator Closure
September 16, 2024
Dear BHCC Community,
The elevator in the N-Building is still closed for repair. The B and D Buildings elevators can access the N-Building until the repairs are completed. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
We will let you know once the elevator is repaired and everything is back up and running.

The elevator in the N-Building is still under repair and inoperable. Elevators in the B and D Buildings can access the N Building until the repairs are completed. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Dear BHCC Community,
Please be advised that the elevator in the N-Building is temporarily closed for repairs. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
If you need to access the upper floors of the N-Building during this time, you can use the elevators in either the B or D buildings and enter the 2nd or 3rd floors of the N-Building from there.
We expect the repairs to be completed by the end of today, and we’ll send you an update once everything is back up and running.

Facilities Update: Campus-Wide Clock System
The automated campus-wide clock system has failed. Facilities has installed battery operated clocks in many locations across campus. If you need a temporary clock or see a location(s) that needs a clock, please submit a work order through Asset Essentials.
Facilities Update: Possible short-term power outage August 26, 2024
BHCC may experience a short-term power outage Monday morning August 26, 2024. Eversource will be testing the BHCC substation. If the power is interrupted, it will be restored within minutes. The emergency generators may start and provide emergency power for life safety devices during the short-term outage.
Facilities Update: E-Building Electricity Shutdown Saturday, August 10, 2024
Electricity will be shut down in E-Building tomorrow, Saturday, August 10, 2024, to allow the electrical contractor to wire new electric panels as part of the ongoing E-Building renovation.
The 2nd floor passageway through the E-Building will remain open, and normal electrical service will be restored by the end of the day on Saturday.
Fire Alarm Testing on August 6 (Charlestown Campus)
Dear BHCC Community,
Please be advised that on Tuesday, August 6, fire alarm testing is scheduled for all buildings on the Charlestown Campus. The testing will occur during the hours of 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. During testing, you may hear intermittent alarms and horns and see flashing strobes. Please remember this is only a test. In an actual emergency, you will receive instructions from Campus Police and/or the Boston Fire Department.
Facilities Update: Study Rooms
Dear students, faculty, and staff,
Please be advised that the study rooms in D-Building and N-Building will be closed on Friday, August 2 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Friday, August 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this time, TSS and Red Thread will be working through repairs for the technology in those rooms.
July 10: Update - Charlestown Campus Construction Activites
Dear BHCC Community,
The general contractor has informed BHCC that air testing and balancing will begin on Thursday, July 11, in the Student Success Center. The testing and balancing will begin on the third floor and move to the second floor, then the first. The techs will be in the classrooms, office areas, group study rooms, and hallways for a brief time performing the tests. If you have a question, comment, or concern, please do not hesitate to contact Facilities at 617-228-2240.
July 9: BHCC Charlestown Campus Construction Activities
Dear BHCC Community,
Please be advised that during the next few days, the general contractor will be scheduling final air balancing and testing in the Student Success Center to complete the commissioning of the heating and cooling systems. There will likely be three tech carpenters to remove and reinstall ceiling tile where necessary, an air balancing tech with a "hood" to measure airflow, and a controls tech entering data and making electronic system adjustments. This may take a few weeks to schedule and complete. However, this task will be completed before the fall semester.
June 21, 2024 - Fire Alarm Testing on Charlestown Campus
Please be advised that from Wednesday, June 26, through Friday, June 28, fire alarm testing is scheduled for all buildings on the Charlestown Campus. The testing will occur during the hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. During testing, you may hear intermittent alarms and horns and see flashing strobes. Please remember this is only a test. In an actual emergency during this time, you will receive instructions from Campus Police and/or the Boston Fire Department.

In this edition of the Facilities Highlights, we are sharing information on both the Charlestown and Chelsea campuses.
Charlestown Campus Announcements
- 5/28 - 6/8: The MBTA will use part of the gravel lot area for their 10-day shutdown work. Learn more about the MBTA work.
- Beginning 6/3: The E-Building 4th floor including cafeteria and culinary arts and the E-Building 1st floor VMA area will be closed for continued project work this summer.
- The N-Building punch list will continue during the summer.
- E-Building renovations continue with a January 2025 opening.
- Landscaping, Lot 4 EV charging stations, and additional seating outside are being worked on.
Chelsea Campus Announcement
- The new space for the Student Support Services on the first floor will be finalized and open this summer.

Facilities Update: N-Building power shut down on Friday, May 24
Dear BHCC Community,
Please be advised that Facilities will shut down the power in the Student Success Center (N-Building) on May 24, 2024, from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Please power down all computers and equipment on Thursday, May 23, and make alternative arrangements if you need to be on campus in the N-Building during that time. We anticipate that power will be fully restored before 9 a.m. The rest of campus will have power.

May 22: BHCC Parking Lots and Perimeter Road Work
Dear BHCC Faculty and Staff,
On Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27, our parking lots and areas around Perimeter Road will be swept. Additionally, all parking spaces in our parking lots and around Perimeter Road will be restriped. Facilities kindly request that no vehicles be left on site during this work. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
May 6: Facilities Update - Parking Lots 6 and 7
Dear Colleagues,
Please be advised that starting tomorrow, May 7, 2024, portions of parking lots 6 and 7 will be fenced to allow exterior window demolition and installation on Floors 3 and 4 of the E-Building. The loss of spaces will continue through September. Attached is the plan with the marked-up areas that will be blocked off.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience while we improve the campus.

March 27: Facilities Highlights
Dear BHCC Community,
Welcome back to this week's edition of the Facilities Highlights, specially crafted to complement the BHCC Update and keep you informed about the latest developments across our Charlestown and Chelsea campuses.
Power on the third floor of the D-Building has been restored.
The scheduled work during last week's Spring Break on the Charlestown Campus resulted in significant progress on the N-Building punch list items and progress on the E-Building.
Thank you to all the areas that made this possible, and we appreciate your flexibility and patience as this necessary work was completed.
Work over Spring Break included upgrading the campus's WiFi, installing a walk-off mat in the N-Building main entry, installing an emergency generator, installing lighting and associated electrical systems in the library and stairwell B, and reinstalling banquette table tops and other hardware on floor 2.
Bond construction crews will continue working on outstanding punch list items including signage, window treatments, some stair lighting, and ongoing fire alarm system work. Work on E-Building renovation continues, with structural steelwork ongoing. Contractors and BHCC staff will continue to work with E-Building occupants on noise abatement and possible space relocation during this intensive phase of construction.

Here are the key highlights for the week of February 26, 2024.
Charlestown Campus: (Charlestown Campus Directory Map)
Special note for Spring Break week (March 18-22): As noted below, there will be more disruption on the Charlestown campus as there are no classes and fewer people on campus. The College is looking at what offices are scheduled to be open and how best to minimize these disruptions. More details will follow.
Student Success Center (N-Building):
- All bathrooms are now open.
- Spring Break week is targeted for planned work to minimize disruptions on an open campus.
- Installation of entry mat at N-Building entrance scheduled for Spring Break (2-day closure). Dates are to be confirmed and communicated, with alternative entrance signs posted.
E-Building Renovation Project:
- Progressing through rough out stages with demolition and abatement near completion.
- Strategic renovations planned during Spring Break to leverage minimal activity with no classes.
- Material deliveries are scheduled before and during Spring Break week.
Buildings A-E (excluding N and G)
- Testing on emergency lights will take place during Spring Break. Please be aware that even though the testing will be a few minutes, power will be out, and if any systems need to be reset or manually turned back on, that should be noted.
Chelsea Campus:
- Signage for the new first-floor Student Services is being planned.
- A Chelsea Campus Directory is in the works, featuring the new Enterprise Center for Entrepreneurship & Training (ECET) on floor 5.

Student Success Center (N-Building):
- A successful ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Monday, February 12, with nearly 100 attendees. Look out for the upcoming news story and photos.
- Ongoing tasks by contractors are wrapping up at the Student Success Center. Some restrooms are now open, and installing updated locks for others is in progress.
E-Building Renovation Project:
- Abatement activities in the E-Building are nearing completion.
- During Tuesday's snow day, fire protection work was done in normally occupied areas, including the Innovation Lab. Additional work is also scheduled on Saturday in areas close to occupied spaces.
Chelsea Campus:
- A Chelsea Campus Directory is in the works, featuring the new Enterprise Center for Entrepreneurship & Training (ECET) on floor 5.

Charlestown Campus
The Charlestown Campus Directory Map is now available for download and is displayed throughout the Charlestown Campus.
E-Building Renovation Project
The E-Building demolition and abatement activities are progressing. Please note that the AIDE/Innovation Lab in E-230 may be temporarily closed on Friday to facilitate necessary work. Offices will receive a notification once confirmed.
A reminder to the Access Points and Floor-Specific Updates:
- The central stairway is closed, but side stairwells remain open.
- The E-Building elevator and stairs closest to D-Building can access floors 1 and 2.
- The E-Building elevator and stairs closest to G-Building can access floors 1, 2 and 4.
- Floor 4: The Cafeteria, Culinary Dining Room, and classrooms are open and accessible via the stairwell and elevator near G-Building.
- Floor 3: Closed for construction.
- Floor 2: The main hallway is open for transit between D-G-Buildings. Remaining open on this floor is the Office of Disability Services, the Innovation Center, and AIDE.
- Floor 1: Accessible via the stairwells and elevators closest to D-G-Buildings. The Bookstore has moved to floor 1. The Media Arts classrooms and Print Center remain accessible on floor 1.

Dear BHCC Community,
We are pleased to introduce the Weekly Facilities Highlights, a supplement to the BHCC Update. This will be delivered to your mailbox at the beginning of the week. Its purpose is to inform you about the progress and changes by providing information to help you navigate the ongoing developments on our two campuses in Charlestown and Chelsea.
The Campus Directory Map is available to download and view online and is displayed throughout the Charlestown Campus. The Facilities Update webpage provides a central place to see project updates and past communication. You can also find a list of offices relocated from the D-Building, E-Building, and what’s in the new N-Building (Student Success Center).
Below, you'll find the most recent updates on our continuous efforts to enhance and improve our facilities for the week of January 29, 2024.
Charlestown Campus
Parking
Lot 4 has reopened and is reserved for accessible and visitor parking. This entrance is the closest to the main entrance of the Student Success Center, with a quick route into the B-Building.
E-Building Construction
The E-Building renovations are underway and scheduled to continue through 2024. Demolition and abatement activities are ongoing on floors 1, 2, and 3.
Access Points and Floor-Specific Updates:
- The central stairway is closed, but side stairwells remain open.
- The E-Building elevator and stairs closest to D-Building can access the 1st and 2nd floors.
- The E-Building elevator and stairs closest to G-Building can access the 1st, 2nd, and 4th floors.
- Floor 4: The Cafeteria, Culinary Dining Room, and classrooms are open and accessible via the stairwell and elevator near G-Building.
- Floor 3: Closed for construction.

Student Success Center (N-Building)
While the Student Success Center is open, some outstanding action items or tasks will still be completed over the next few weeks. During this time, certain areas may experience temporary closures or limited access. The restrooms are expected to be open this week; nearby restrooms are available in the B- and D-Buildings.
The first-floor entrance to the Student Success Center adjacent to Lot 4 also provides access to the B-Building, replacing the former lower B-Building lobby.
January 10, 2024: Stair Closures for Painting
Charlestown Campus
Dear BHCC Community,
Please be advised that the B staircase, located at the back of the N-Building, will be closed for painting today, January 10. On Thursday, January 11, the A staircase at the front of the N-Building near the main entrance and security desk will be closed for painting.

December 21, 2023: E-Building Renovation

Dear Colleagues,
Please be advised of the following updates regarding the E-Building renovation:
- The entire E-building is now open. Construction of the overhead passageway is complete.
- There will be no network in E-Building on December 22. Employees can work elsewhere on the Charlestown or Chelsea campus or work remotely.
- For employees who are moving from the E-Building, anything that is not packed and labeled by 5 p.m. on December 22, will be discarded in the move.

December 20, 2023: E-Building Floors 1 and 2 Corridors Closed Wednesday Afternoon
Charlestown Campus
Dear BHCC Community:
Due to the upcoming E-Building renovation, our construction team will be installing a covered walkway in the 2nd floor corridor of E-Building today, Wednesday, December 20, and tomorrow, Thursday, December 21. During this time, the first and second floors of E-Building will be closed. The first and second floor corridors will be open for safe passage on Friday, December 22nd.
For today and tomorrow, please travel through the E Building by taking the stairwells or elevators on either end of the E Building, adjacent to G Building and D Building to the fourth floor, where you can cross E-Building and then travel back down to the first or second floors via the opposite elevator or stairwell.

Beginning October 16, and continuing through October 20, National Grid will be installing an underground natural gas line in the perimeter road parallel to Rutherford Avenue. National Grid and Bond Building will attempt to keep the perimeter road open for one lane of traffic. No Parking will be allowed on perimeter road during this time. All parking lots will remain open. BHCC Campus Police will be providing a detail to ensure safety for the work crews and anyone driving through the construction zone. There will be subsequent emails with periodic updates during the week of October 16 - October 20 informing of potential closures or schedule modifications.

August 17, 2023: Level 1 C-Building Corridor Closure

Construction of a controlled access intersection through Level 1 C-Building corridor has begun. The intersection will be built to allow construction access through the B-D Building courtyard into the new addition courtyard. When the corridor is not in use by construction, two removable wall panels on either side of the corridor will be able to be removed to allow student access through the hall.

July 26, 2023: B and D building elevators

On Thursday, July 27, a short power interruption will affect B and D building elevators. The outage will occur between the hours of 6-8 a.m.
In addition, the first-floor connector between buildings C and D will be frequently closed for construction. The contractor is constructing a secure passage from the Rutherford Avenue side of the C-Building into the new courtyard. Access to the first floor of D-Building can be accessed using the D- Building stairway. The construction may extend for two months.

The restrooms in the D-Building will be undergoing modifications during the next several weeks. The restrooms will be taken offline by floor. Below is the schedule:
- Third floor restrooms are currently closed and will reopen on Monday June 12.
- Work will begin on the second floor of D-Building on Monday June 12 and will reopen on Monday June 26, 2023.
- Work will begin on the first floor of D-Building on Monday June 26 and reopen on Monday July 10, 2023.

January 13, 2023: Tile Installation 1st Floor of B-Building

A contractor will be installing VCT (vinyl composition tile) in the hallways on the 1st floor of B-Building during the week of January 16 – 20, 2023. The Assessment Center will remain open and accessible at all times. All offices in the B-Tier will be open and accessible. The classrooms will not be accessible.

January 4, 2023: B-Building restrooms are offline

The B-Building restrooms are offline. The demolition process is underway.
The renovated restrooms in D-Building will be open on Monday January 9, 2023. Until that time restrooms in E and G are available for use.
BHCC has contracted with a demolition contractor to remove floor tile between the restrooms on the 1st and 3rd floors of D-Building. This work will be completed by the end of the week.
