Bunker Hill Community College TRIO Participant Wins Christian A. Herter Scholarship

Thursday, June 26, 2014

Marialena Montijo received the Christian A. Herter Scholarship at a State House ceremony on May 22, 2014. Montijo is enrolled in the TRIO-Talent Search program, a Bunker Hill Community College partnership with Chelsea Public Schools and FUEL Education. TRIO-Talent Search, which receives funding from the U.S. Department of Education, identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education.

Montijo became part of BHCC’s TRIO-Talent Search as a high school freshman. Now a junior at Chelsea High School, she received the scholarship based on her academic performance, her drive to attend college and her resilience in overcoming adversity.

“We are thrilled that Marialena has been recognized as a Herter Scholar,” said Director of BHCC’s TRIO Talent Search Austin Mirasolo. Each year 25 students in grades 10 and 11 from across Massachusetts are selected as Herter Scholars. Named for a former Governor of the Commonwealth, the scholarship pays 50 percent of the recipient’s college tuition.

The Christian A. Herter Scholarship, supported by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, assists students who demonstrate academic promise and desire to attend post-secondary institutions and whose backgrounds may inhibit the ability to attain educational goals.
