Bunker Hill Community College Awarded Citizen Schools’ “Partnership of the Year”
Thursday, July 27, 2017
Citizen Schools is an after-school program that serves adolescent youth in low-income communities who need additional support and resources. The program supports academic achievement in core subjects like English Language Arts and Mathematics, while building social and emotional skills through real-world learning experiences. The students work with citizen teachers to learn new skills and explore career fields through 10-week apprenticeships.
BHCC education majors participate in this program as part of their practicum. They meet with the students twice a week. Each semester Citizens Schools students elect their apprenticeship theme, such as math games, robotics or girls rock. The BHCC Citizen Teachers prepare weekly lesson plans with lead teachers and fellow BHCC education students based on a predetermined curriculum. Since the beginning of the partnership with Citizen Schools, BHCC students have led 61 apprenticeships.
The celebration included an end-of-semester showcase and a networking session for the Citizen Teachers, Writing Coaches and Citizen Schools Staff.
