BHCC Among Recipients of Workforce Skills Capital Grants
Friday, October 13, 2017
On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, the Baker-Polito Administration awarded $9.5 million in Workforce Skills Capital Grants to 32 vocational schools, community colleges and traditional public high schools at an event at Nashoba Valley Regional High School. Bunker Hill Community College received $247,566 in grant funding to enhance its General Sonography and Cardiac Sonography Associate Degree programs.
This is the second year that BHCC has received funding from this program, with the previous award funding a new engineering laboratory, scheduled to open in January 2018. This year’s grant will be used to purchase two ultrasound machines for the College’s General Sonography and Cardiac Sonography A.S. programs, giving students hands-on experience and up-to-date training with industry standard equipment.
BHCC offers the only A.S. Sonography program in the City of Boston and the largest combined A.S. Sonography Training program (cardiac and general) in the State. Students in these two programs represent mostly low-income, first-generation and female students; after successful completion of the programs, these students have the potential to earn six-figure salaries after a few years of work experience.
The Workforce Skills Capital Grants program was created by the Baker-Polito Administration last year to assist education institutions in demonstrating partnerships with industry and aligning curriculum and credentials with local businesses’ demand, maximizing planning objectives and hiring or internship opportunities regionally.
