BHCC Recognized in New York Times Op-Ed for Leadership in Student Hunger Relief
Tuesday, January 16, 2018
In an op-ed published by the The New York Times over the weekend, Temple University Education Sociologist Sara Goldrick-Rab recognized Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) for its work distributing meal vouchers to food-insecure students through the College’s “One Solid Meal” program.
Goldrick-Rab, who keynoted the College’s first Voices of Hunger on Campus summit last May, is the author of Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid, and the Betrayal of the American Dream. The book enlarges our traditional understanding of the cost of education beyond tuition and fees.
The op-ed came on the heels of an announcement by The Temple News that the professor has raised $133,000 for her Faculty and Student Together Fund (FAST). The FAST Fund provides financial support to students struggling to cover the cost of expenses not included in tuition such as transportation, textbooks and housing. BHCC is one seven colleges nationally where students are currently benefitting from the funding.
