Bunker Hill Community College’s Literary Magazine Wins Superior Distinction from National Council of Teachers of English

Thursday, February 13, 2025

For the third time, Tell Magazine, Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) 's student literary magazine, has been awarded a Superior recognition in the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) 's Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest. This year, 422 student magazines were nominated by schools in 46 states and five countries. For the 2024 contest, magazines from middle school, high school, and higher education were welcomed.

“This ongoing recognition highlights the dedication and creativity of our students,” said BHCC English Professor and Tell Faculty Advisor Alison Ruch. “Each issue showcases the distinctive voices and artistic talents of our students and BHCC community—poets, photographers, storytellers, and the student editors who create the magazine twice a year—who bring Tell to life.”

A student-driven publication, Tell is guided by a mission statement crafted by its student editors: “Tell facilitates an inclusive environment offering a voice via media representation of artistic expression to all BHCC students and community members. Tell is committed to advocating for racial and social justice and to centering and honoring the assets and cultural wealth of historically marginalized people.”

“This award is a testament to the passion and commitment of BHCC students and faculty,” said BHCC President Pam Eddinger. “To be recognized multiple times speaks to the lasting impact of Tell. Our students have powerful stories to share, and Tell gives them a space to be heard. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this publication such an outstanding success.”

The REALM program publicly recognizes excellent literary magazines produced by students with the support of their teachers. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.  Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate magazines.

Established in the spring of 2018, Tell is a digital literary magazine produced each fall and spring as part of the Literary Publishing course. It features original artwork, poetry, stories, and essays from the BHCC community and is free on the BHCC website. Tell Magazine’s 2025 spring issue theme is ‘HOME’ and accepts artwork, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction submissions until March 7 at tellmagazine@bhcc.edu. All languages are welcome!
