This session will explore the radical and less popularly known details about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as featured in his last televised interview with NBC and speeches such as The Other America, and writings in Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community. We will unpack the complexity of who he was to society and address the questions: Who was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, really? What often goes missing in celebrations of his legacy? And How does Dr. King’s legacy inform us today?

This presentation is an analysis of religion as an agent of social change. It explores the argument that religion is a source of violence and one that legitimizes the status quo. In contrast, the presentation explores Dr. King’s use of religion as a conduit to assert the claims for civil rights thus leading to the passing of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964.

Selma
Join the community to watch the historical, drama film, Selma. Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for Blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (actor: David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated with President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

A Dream or a Vision: Voices of Reflective Learners on the Application of MLK Jr “Dream” Speech
The panel will encompass the voices of a group of learners. This presentation will highlight the reflections and insights of learners centered on one of M.L.K. Jr. monumental Speeches. Learners will first reflect on the focus of the speech to address whether it was a “dream” or a “vision.” Learners will secondly reflect on the general content of the speech to highlight its relevance, to a “dream” versus a “vision.” Learners will thirdly reflect on specific content of the speech to offer insight on its relevance to life in the past, and to their lives today. The presentation is designed to address the extent to which the foresight of MLK Jr has been realized today, and if not, where do today’s learners sense they are today in relation to the aspirational content of the speech.

The Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu knew from early in life that the one thing she would never be is a priest. She has always said, “I have my father’s nose, I do not want his job” However, after years spent as a development consultant, educator and race and gender activist she accepted her call to ordained ministry. She is an Episcopal priest who most recently was Associate Rector at All Saints, Beverly Hills. The challenges of growing black and female in apartheid South Africa have been the foundation of Naomi’s life as an activist for human rights. Those experiences taught her that our whole human family loses when we accept situations of oppression, and how the teaching and preaching hate and division injure us all. Rev. Tutu is the third child Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu. She was born in South Africa and had the opportunity to live in many communities and countries.

Join author and BHCC Professor George Walters-Sleyon as he shares on the topic of his latest book The Rush for Black Diamonds, Volume One, the first of two volumes. It explores the Transatlantic slave trade and its mutation into chattel slavery. Volume One focuses on the involvement of two prominent Enlightenment philosophers as the architects of the political, legal, economic, and philosophical justifications for the human trade and chattel slavery in the United Kingdom and the United States: British philosopher, John Locke and President Thomas Jefferson, both slave traders and slave masters. Used as a metaphor, Black Diamonds captures the exploration of Western nations’ rush for Black people across the Atlantic Ocean to be used as economic units and chattel property.

Harnessing biological diversity for programmable cell control. We leverage the remarkable diversity of biological systems, zooming into the complex immune systems in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, to develop a next-generation cell engineering toolbox capable of dynamically sensing cell identities and cell states and controlling cell phenotype and function by editing the genome, transcriptome, and proteome.

International Women's Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness and work together towards a more equitable world where difference is both valued and celebrated. Let’s come together for tea and conversation as we collectively forge a more inclusive world for women. When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we frame a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Let’s commit to Inspire Inclusion!

A timed multimedia performance installation, She, Her, and I invites spectators and visitors into an immersive sensual experience by meandering in a space in which all their senses will be engaged. She, Her, and I; a Fleeting Story is inspired by lives of multiple generations of women who have migrated from the Asian continent to the States, reflecting back to their mothers and forward to their daughters. The installation aims to remind the spectators how fleeting the fantasized notion of the woman has been when fantasized by the western artists. Especially when she, with her real body and voice, reveals herself through layers of notions and senses. Tonight, She, Her, and I; this mysterious woman beyond the West, who was exoticized in sensational arias from Puccini’s Turandot and Madam Butterfly moves in the space of the performance installation. Proshot invites the spectator to receive the real woman by meandering along her when she paces the space, in between layers of senses, to experience her presence, this woman from beyond the West, in the ocean of notions and senses.

Small Mouth Sounds, A Play by Bess Wohl
In the overwhelming quiet of the woods, six runaways from city life embark on a silent retreat. As these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect. Filled with awkward and insightful humor, SMALL MOUTH SOUNDS is a unique and compassionate play that asks how we address life’s biggest questions when words fail us.

BHCC will host a screening of the celebrated documentary film Inundation District, followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Boston Globe reporter David Abel. The screening is free and open to the public.
Inundation District tells the story of one of Boston’s newest and most climate change-vulnerable neighborhoods. In a time of rising seas and intensifying storms, one of the world’s wealthiest, most-educated cities made a fateful decision to spend billions of dollars erecting a new district along its coast — on landfill, at sea level. Unlike other places imperiled by climate change, this neighborhood of glass towers housing some of the world’s largest companies was built well after scientists began warning of the threats, including many at its renowned universities. The city, which already has more high-tide flooding than nearly any other in the United States, called its new quarter the Innovation District. But with seas rising inexorably, and at an accelerating rate, others are calling the neighborhood by a different name: Inundation District.

In that year of not speaking, Silence emerges as a woman with a voice—however, not before she is accused of witchcraft. This is the story of Julia’s seventh great grandmother and is deeply researched through Ancestry.com. She will discuss the witch trials, the handicrafts of the era, the constraints on women, and the way women such as Silence Marsh found their voices despite those constraints.
