Facilities Update - December 16, 2021

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) in conjunction with the Department of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM), Thompson Engineering, NBBJ Architects, and Bond Building, will replace the electrical infrastructure this spring. There will be considerable activity on the grounds and roadways as trench excavation and underground duct banks are installed to serve new transformers and switchgear. We will keep you posted regarding construction start dates, estimated duration of tasks, and road closures.

A more immediate project is taking shape internally. In addition to the electrical infrastructure, BHCC has received funding to replace the internal electrical subpanels that feed boilers, pumps, motors, lighting, and duplex outlets. The panels are located throughout the College in the electric closets on each floor and the tunnel. On December 16, work is taking place on the D1 lighting panel. Scheduled for December 17 is lighting panel D2. We are consulting the classroom schedule to identify work areas to minimize the impact on faculty, staff, or students.

The electrical contractor is scheduled to work during the BHCC winter maintenance shut down. As a result, multiple lighting and convenience panels will be replaced between December 24, 2021, and January 3, 2022. Work is scheduled through the winter break until the spring semester. We will consult the classroom schedule for Intercession room assignments to minimize possible disruption to students, faculty, and staff.

The construction of the new building will begin in the spring of ’2022!

Please contact BHCC Facilities with questions or comments.

Facilities Update - May 5, 2020

Sent on behalf of Gary Bigelow, Executive Director Facilities Planning, Construction & Energy Management

Good afternoon.

With warmer weather rapidly approaching, I wish you all the best! Time to get out and loosen up a bit after the long winter and extraordinarily challenging spring. I hope you are well and thinking of what the “new” normal means to you.

BHCC is beginning the Building B roof and skylight replacement project. This project is being funded by the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, (DCAMM), through our Deferred Maintenance Fund.

This project is kicking off on Friday May 8, 2020 with the delivery of 11 trailer loads of roofing materials, with work slated to begin on Monday May 11, 2020. The project duration is 220 days; however, with the campus offering remote summer classes and limited staff on campus, we will gain some efficiency, allowing a more timely completion.

There will be dumpsters in the parking spaces along perimeter road from time to time to collect the roofing materials being removed. The contractors will periodically request we close the perimeter road to allow crane access as required to remove material from the roof and stock new material on the roof. I have requested a few days notification prior to any road closures so that timely notification can made to the BHCC community.

Replacing the roof and skylights is a substantial undertaking. The contractors will comply with DCAMM guidelines for construction during COVID-19. , They will be required to wear face coverings and gloves and practice social distancing where practical.

BHCC has designated one stair way for the contractors use and designated the 3rd floor B – building women’s rest room for their use with appropriate signage indicating this use. The contractors will be using the stairs to the right of Security on B1 and will be required to sign in and out with Security. Other areas of the school will be off limits and caution tape will be installed to identify those “off limits” areas.

Periodic updates will be provided as the project progresses.

Please direct any questions or comments to: gbigelow@bhcc.edu or call 617-936-1985.

Be safe!

Gary

D-Building Restrooms closed as part of the Restroom Renovation Project on the Charlestown Campus - April 5, 2022

Dear BHCC Community,

As part of the campus-wide Restroom Renovation project, we wanted to make the community aware of some upcoming changes to restroom availability on the Charlestown Campus.

As you may know, the College has embarked on a multi-phase project to upgrade restrooms and to create additional ADA compliant, gender-inclusive restrooms throughout our campus. The College is committed to providing safe and accessible campus restroom facilities to all members of our community. We encourage individuals to make choices about restroom usage based on their own level of comfort and their gender identity or expression. Our goal is to provide restroom facilities that meet a full spectrum of needs.

Beginning on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, all D-Building restrooms will be closed for renovation. We expect the renovations to be complete and to reopen the restrooms by early September. We are working on all of the D-Building restrooms simultaneously because the facilities are stacked vertically on floors 1, 2, and 3. While these facilities are closed, signage will be placed to direct users to available restroom. The closest restrooms to the D-Building are located in the E-Building.

The following restrooms are currently available:
E-Building – both men’s and women's restrooms on floors 1,2,3 & 4
G-Building - single-occupant/gender-inclusive restrooms on floors 1 & 2; both men’s and women's restrooms on floors 1
B-Building – one temporary, gender-inclusive multi-stall restroom on floor 1; men’s restrooms on floors 1,2, & 3; women’s restrooms on floors 2 & 3

Beginning on Wednesday, materials will be delivered to campus and temporary walls put in place to separate the work area from the hallway. As with many projects, there may be noise and dust generated during the demolition process, which our teams will work to mitigate as much as possible. Please understand this process is difficult and at times will be disruptive.

The restroom renovation project signifies another major step forward to achieving renewal of the BHCC physical plant. In the coming weeks, you will receive an update on plans for the Restroom Renovation project as well as construction of the new Academic Student Success Center.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work to make this a better, more inclusive learning environment for the BHCC community.
